Look under your RZR, just below the driver seat, and you’ll see the RZR’s main electrical system. The voltage regulator, main fuse block & vehicle wiring harness are all hanging down, exposed, under the RZR. This may be convenient for Polaris when they build the RZR, but it is far from optimum for riding off road where water, mud, rocks and sticks frequently bounce off the bottom of the machine. Not only are all of these fragile electrical parts exposed to the trail underneath the vehicle, they are also exposed to the left rear tire which throws large amounts of mud and rocks forward while accelerating, and also blasts these parts with mud and rocks when spinning in reverse.

Thunderhawk Performance invented the RZR fuel tank guard in 2007 to protect the RZR gas tank, which is similarly exposed under the passenger seat of the RZR. This new Voltage Regulator Guard is constructed of the same strong 1/8” aircraft aluminum as our fuel tank guards, and is mounted in a similar fashion so that it will stand-up to all of the hard trail-use that you may encounter, just as you have come to expect from Thunderhawk Performance products.

Voltage regulator failures are actually somewhat common on the RZR, primarily due to the build-up of mud on the regulator. When the rear tire deposits mud onto the regulator, the mud does not allow the finned aluminum regulator body to dissipate heat as it was designed, which leads to overheating and failure of the regulator. Some people have also experienced electrical problems due to corrosion in the fuse block and wiring harnesses, which can happen rather quickly when a coating of mud holds moisture on these parts and they cannot dry-out as intended. Another potential problem is that a stick kicked-up under the RZR can also damage the wiring harness that is hanging down from the fuse block under the vehicle.

Thunderhawk Performance designed this Voltage Regulator Guard to provide maximum strength, protection from mud & debris and also to incorporate airflow vents for voltage regulator cooling. Thunderhawk's one-piece design, 1/8” thick aircraft-grade aluminum construction, and mounting bolts that are not exposed to trail contact provides the strength and protection necessary even when this guard is sliding over an obstacle on the trail. The aircraft-grade skid plate material we use is 50% stronger than the softer ornamental grades of aluminum (such as 3000-series diamond plate) that are frequently used for automotive accessories. The rear (vertical) section of the Thunderhawk Regulator Guard provides protection from mud, rocks, and debris thrown by the rear tire. This rear section is designed to eliminate openings at the top that can actually "scoop" rocks and debris thrown by the tire, while side vents allow warm air to escape. The bottom (horizontal) section is vented to allow airflow into the regulator while protecting the electrical components from rocks, sticks, and heavy mud to which they would otherwise be exposed.

The Thunderhawk Performance RZR Voltage Regulator Guard installs easily in about 15 minutes. This part is available in bare aluminum or with an optional black powder coat finish (adds $10.00). This is a complete kit including the regulator guard, all necessary hardware, and illustrated instructions. Fits all 2015 & newer Polaris RZR 900 models and the 2016 RZR-S 1000, whether equipped with stock or most aftermarket skid plates (not recommended for installation with Tusk brand skid plate).
